After a major recruitment drive, the newly bolstered Groucho Cricket Club squad have been training hard in pre-season nets. We took to the field against the Edward Alleyn Cub in Dulwich Village with 7 uncapped new Members. With only two fixtures this season, the hope is as the squad develops we can return to our glory days, with more matches against other venerable Soho insitituions and even potential a ‘Soho Cup’ competition.
Skipper Jimmy McGhie won the toss and elected to bat, opening with James Waddington. The pitch was slow and the Alleynians’s bowling was accurate and extremely difficult to score off. After a somewhat cautious start, Groucho made it to 80 for 2 after 20 overs with McGhie scoring a punchy if somewhat erratic 69. Notable knocks came from Toby Tobias and the extremely elegant Adrian Houston before Jeff ‘Boom Boom’ Connon started peppering a few of the local back gardens with some enormous sixes. His barnstorming 60 not out ably supported by the imovable Cobalt Stargazer, pushed Groucho to the respectable total of 212 after their 40 overs.
Jeff then opened the bowling with speed and venom and was very unlucky to have a couple of early chances put down. Barry Dudley, Sam Carrington, Leon Butler and Adrian Houston who seemingly had the ball on a string at times, toiled away, but the Alleynian openers would not budge and the Groucho total was dismantled with relative ease.
A resounding victory for the opposition in truth, but a bright and exciting start for the new and improved Groucho Cricket Club.
